|Gum disease is a very common condition. If caught early, it is relatively easy to treat and can prevent more serious problems that arise if left untreated.
If you are considering dental implants you should first determine the condition of your gums and the underlying structures. Dental implants require strong bone to fit the implant. If you have gum disease and it is left untreated, the dental implant will fail. You should know the symptoms of early gum disease if you are contemplating implants. The gum disease must be treated first.
What Are the Symptoms of Gum Disease?When you brush your teeth you should examine your gums. One of the very early signs of gum disease is simply that the area that is infected will become red, much like a cut or scratch that has become infected. This is the time where you need to come in and get your mouth checked out. Treatment at this point could mean just a deep cleaning. If left untreated, more treatment becomes necessary.
As gum disease progresses, so do the symptoms. The redness will start to swell, or you may notice that your gums bleed when you brush. This is a sign of gingivitis. This is also a reasonably simple condition to treat. Again, only we can treat it; you can't do it yourself.
The most obvious clue to most people is that their gums start to recede. Once this begins to occur, you are now open for more serious issues. The ligament that holds your teeth in place may start to deteriorate and you may begin suffering from a bone loss in your jaw.
How Does That Affect Implants?When you get a dental implant the first step is to screw a post into your jawbone and gums. This post acts as a replacement for the missing tooth's root. Once it fuses with your jawbone the crown, your new tooth, is placed on the titanium screw or post. It is essential to have enough strong bone for this process so gum disease must be treated first. If you have already lost bone, don't worry, that can be fixed as well.
