Surgical Instructions

Close up of woman smiling after healing from surgery by periodontist in Chandler, AZ.At Scholes Periodontics & Implants, we believe it is important that you go into all surgical procedures with some knowledge of what to expect before, during, and after the procedure. The following suggestions can be useful when preparing for your surgery. If you have questions or concerns, please call us at (602) 900-1609 and we will be happy to help you.

Before and after any surgery you will be given instructions specific to your surgery. Your personalized instructions are always to be followed.

Pre-Operative Instructions

Well before surgery, we will ask you about any medications that you are taking. It is important that you let us know about any and all medications you take so that we can plan accordingly. Usually, we will ask that you discontinue use of blood thinners before surgery. Always consult your physician before ceasing to take any prescribed medication.

If we prescribe you an antibiotic as premedication for surgery, make sure to take it as directed. As with all antibiotics, it is critical that you finish the whole prescription.

It can be helpful to eat before going into surgery. Eating before surgery can settle your stomach and ensure that you feel well. If you are going to be placed under conscious sedation, you may be asked not to eat before surgery, which will be outlined in your pre-operative instructions.

Make sure to bring a sweatshirt or long sleeved shirt. Dressing for warmth is important because the office is air conditioned and sedatives can amplify the sensation of cold. You are welcome to bring a phone or MP3 player to listen to music on, provided that you bring headphones as well.

We will schedule a follow-up appointment with you to check on your post-surgery healing progress.

Anytime that you are placed under sedation we suggest that you bring a friend or family member to help get you to and from the office safely. Many oral sedatives require someone to drive you to and from our office.

Post-Operative Instructions

•  Avoid hot fluids and foods for at least 24 hours following oral surgery. Heat can encourage bleeding at the surgery site. Similarly, avoid crunchy food for at least two weeks following surgery. Try your best to chew your food away from the surgery site.
•  Do not panic at the sight of blood tinged saliva for the first day or so. Minor bleeding is normal. Rinse with cold water.
•  Swelling is a sign that you are healing. To mitigate the effects of swelling, apply a cold compress to your cheek using firm pressure for about ten minutes.
•  Discomfort and minor pain are normal following surgery. Take painkillers that are prescribed to you as directed to mitigate pain and discomfort.
•  If significant pain continues past a week or so, call us and let us know as this could be a sign of a serious issue.
•  Avoid smoking and tobacco use.
•  Do not use a waterpik or any variety of toothbrush on the surgical site.
•  Brush and floss non-surgical sites as you normally do.
•  Avoid vigorous exercise and physical activity for at least 72 hours following surgery as a significant rise in blood pressure can cause bleeding
