In recent years, vaping has become more and more commonplace as an alternative to tobacco use. To many people who battle an addiction to tobacco, the use of a vaping tool seems like an answer to prayers. To be sure, vaping seems to be at least somewhat safer than outright tobacco use, although its exact long-term effects are still unknown. But what about your gums? Most of our patients know to avoid using tobacco for the sake of their oral health, but is vaping any different? Vaping and Your GumsIn short, vaping can still negatively impact your gums. This is due largely to the nicotine included in the vapor. When it comes into contact with the gum tissue, it causes the blood vessels to shrink in size, reducing the flow of blood.Your gums need the blood flow because it carries necessary elements such as oxygen and other nutrients. When the blood flow is restricted, it can contribute to the development of gum disease. In addition, because the blood circulation is reduced, your mouth will have a more difficult time fighting off infection. This means that, all else being equal, you are more likely to develop issues such as gum disease if you are vaping. Your Oral Health MattersAlthough we know this news might be something of a disappointment to our patients, we firmly believe that an honest answer to their questions is best. If you are still not sure whether vaping is harmful to your gums, we encourage you to ask about it the next time you stop by.We are happy to take a few moments of the day to sit down with you and discuss the matter. We want you to be healthy, and a big part of that is giving you the information you need to make the best choices. So call us today with any questions you may have. |
