Why You Should Not Ignore Your Periodontal Health

Why You Should Not Ignore Your Periodontal HealthDid you know that your periodontal health is linked to your overall health? It is true! If you are not taking care of your teeth and gums, you could be putting your health at risk. Read on to discuss the importance of maintaining good periodontal health and how.

Why Is Periodontal Health Important?

Maintaining good oral health is essential for overall health and well-being. Periodontal disease, or gum disease, is a common problem that can lead to severe consequences if not treated for some time. Periodontal disease may begin with plaque forming on teeth. If it is not removed, it will harden and then become tartar, irritating the gums and leading to inflammation. Over time, the inflammation can damage the tissues that support the teeth and even lead to bone loss. Periodontal disease is a significant cause of tooth loss in adults, but it can be easily prevented with regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups. In addition to preventing tooth loss, maintaining good periodontal health has been linked to reduced risks for other serious health problems, such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Thus, it is imperative to keep your gums healthy and free from disease.

How to Care For Your Periodontal Health?

Your periodontal health is vital to your overall health. Here are a few tips to help you keep your gums and teeth healthy. Smoking should be avoided at all costs. Smoking is one of the first and foremost causes of periodontal disease. Quitting smoking is the best thing you can do for your periodontal health if you smoke. Brushing and flossing are essential to remove plaque from your gums and teeth. Try brushing at least twice a day and flossing once. Eat a healthy diet. Eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains helps reduce inflammation in your body. Inflammation can lead to gum disease. See your dentist every six months for a professional cleaning and checkup. Your dentist can spot early signs of gum disease and help you keep your gums healthy.

If you have any concerns about your periodontal health, discuss them with our dentist. They can provide you with specific instructions on caring for your teeth and gums.
