Because of its severity, you need to get gum disease treated as soon as possible despite how common it is reported to be. Periodontal disease is an ongoing infection of the gums. This infection not only affects the gums but also the jawbone and could lead to overall systemic issues. There are four stages of gum disease, with only the first one being reversible.
It's the only stage of gum disease that can be reversed since it yet has not had the time to attack your bones. Only a few signs show for this stage and most are painless. In most cases, gingivitis occurs silently until it progresses to the final stage. You should watch out for signs like bad breath that occurs occasionally, swelling, and redness of gums. Also, look out for bleeding when flossing or brushing. Proper oral hygiene coupled with regular checkups can reverse gingivitis and improve your oral health.
Slight Periodontal Disease
Being the second stage, it is not reversible; however, it can be managed. Here the infection has spread to attack the bone where it starts destroying it. Signs include more swelling and redness of gums, bleeding when brushing and flossing, bad breath, and probing depths in gums between four and five millimeters.
Moderate Periodontal Disease
This is the third stage and presents with the same symptoms as those of stage two. However, probing depths are about six to seven millimeters. This means that more bacteria are trapped in the pockets which can even enter the bloodstream to reach other body areas and affect your immune system.
Advanced Periodontal Disease
As the final stage of gum disease, advanced periodontitis occurs when the infection progresses further. Here the bacteria once again evolve into disease-causing bacteria. At this stage, you have a risk of 50 to 90 percent bone loss. Your gums are swollen, red, and ooze pus. You also have sensitivity to cold and painful chewing along with severe halitosis or bad breath.
