How to Keep Babies' Gums Healthy

Posted on 4/26/2021 by Janie Scholes
How to Keep Babies' Gums HealthyThe importance of good oral health cannot be stressed enough. This is why good oral habits start young – even before a baby's first teeth come out. Taking care of your baby's gums is a great way to establish a standard of oral care for their entire life. The following are some tips to keep babies' gums healthy.

Cleaning Gums

While babies don't require brushing, their gums still need cleaning. This involves gentle rubbing with wet gauze at least once per day. If the baby has progressed to solid foods, this should be done after every meal.

Diet Low in Sugar

While babies start eating solid food at around 6 months of age, these don't necessarily have to be high in sugar. Sugar-free food like mashed potatoes helps avoid buildup of moist bacteria that can lead to tooth decay.

Proper Brushing

Once the child's teeth start appearing, it's time to start brushing. This requires using a small amount of toothpaste (equivalent to the size of a single grain of rice). Young children should use a formula free of fluoride so that it's safe to swallow. Proper brushing technique should be taught and toddlers should be helped or supervised to ensure this.

Preventing Baby Bottle Tooth Decay

This happens when sugary liquids are left in a baby's mouth for long periods of time. For example, this can occur if the child is drinking juice or formula from a bottle and then falls asleep. To prevent baby bottle tooth decay, make sure that your child isn't given a bottle in bed.

Regular Dental Visits

Once teeth start coming in, it's essential to schedule a dental appointment. Additionally, as changes take place, dentists can guide you on teething, drooling, and more. Regular dental visits, therefore, are a must, and will ensure excellent oral health.
