Common Symptoms of a Gum Disease

Posted on 4/12/2021 by Janie Scholes
Common Symptoms of a Gum DiseaseGum diseases, also collectively known as periodontal diseases, are the infections and conditions that affect the soft gum tissues in our mouth. Gum diseases like gingivitis and periodontitis are the result of bacterial infections that cause inflammation of the gums.

While most gum diseases are the result of bacterial infections, the causes can range from hormonal changes to smoking. Often, malnutrition, and especially the deficiency of vitamin C, is also seen to be the cause of gum diseases. Sometimes, gum diseases can be hereditary, and if parents have weak gums, then children may also develop gum diseases in their adulthood.

However, all gum diseases have some common symptoms that are stated below:

Bleeding Gums

Due to the bacterial infection, our gums become inflamed and start to bleed. Bleeding gums are a common sign of gingivitis in which the bacteria cause plaque buildup on our gumlines that slowly spreads to our gums. As a result, our gums get infected by bacteria and start to bleed. When the blood vessels in our gum tissues become infected and inflamed, bleeding occurs.

Swelling in Gums

Swelling and redness is a sign of increased inflammation. Due to poor oral hygiene, bacteria accumulate on our teeth and gumlines. With time, this thin film of bacteria turns into plaque. When plaque spreads to our gums, an infection occurs. This infection inflames our gums and leads to swelling and soreness.

Pain in Gum Tissues

As a result of inflammation, we feel a sharp pain in our gums. The pain can vary in severity and can range between a tingling sensation or a stinging pain. It is usually this unbearable pain in your gums that will make you want to approach your dentist.

Loose Teeth

As the gum disease gets worse, you will experience loose teeth. Our teeth are implanted deep into our gums. When the gums become weak as a result of gum diseases, the roots of the teeth also become weak and start to lose their grip. As a result, your teeth will become loose, and just by touching them gently with your tongue, you will be able to see your teeth wobble.

Bad Breath

As the gum disease becomes severe and bacterial infections start to spread, your mouth will have a peculiar odor. The bacteria in the mouth, saliva, and gums are responsible for this odor. No matter how many times you brush your teeth to remove the odor, the bad breath will remain because of the infection in your gums.

Gum Recession

You will also notice your gums receding or being pushed back from your teeth. Gum diseases can make our gum tissues weak. As the tissues become weak, they start to pull back, exposing more of your teeth. Unfortunately, gum recession can worsen the infection and make your teeth more susceptible to decay.
