Key Things First Time Denture Wearers Need to Keep an Eye Out For
Posted on 1/25/2021 by Janie Scholes
Wearing dentures for the first time can feel unusual and sometimes uncomfortable, and they can take a while to get used to. There are several new processes that come with wearing dentures, from learning how to speak and eat with them in, to removing them before you go to bed, to cleaning them properly. Here are some things that new denture wearers should keep an eye out for to ensure that their dentures are restoring their smile as comfortably and efficiently as possible.
When your custom dentures are ready, we will of course make sure they fit properly before sending you home. However, since removable dentures are not surgically secured in your jaw, it is natural that they will stop fitting perfectly as your jaw shrinks over time. If you notice that your dentures feel loose or they frequently slip around while you are chewing or talking, come back to see us. It might be necessary to adjust the fit of your dentures.
First-time denture wearers may be tempted to ignore clicking sounds that occur when they talk or chew, writing this off as just another aspect of the unfamiliar new territory of wearing dentures. However, clicking sounds can be another sign that your dentures are not fitting properly. If your dentures click when you talk or chew, this could mean they are too high or too loose. You should come see us for a readjustment or relining.
It is normal to develop sores on your gums as you are getting accustomed to your new dentures, since the dentures are being held in your gums by suction all day. Rinsing your mouth with warm salt water should help get rid of these sores and ease your discomfort. Make sure you remove your dentures at night and clean them thoroughly to not only give your gums a break, but also to ensure that infection-causing bacteria is not building up on your dentures. If you have gum sores that will not go away, or if you have other questions about wearing dentures for the first time, call our office today.
