Clenching Your Teeth Puts a Lot of Stress on Both Teeth and Gums

Clenching Your Teeth Puts a Lot of Stress on Both Teeth and GumsIf you suffer from stress, you can also damage the teeth and gums. That is because some people clench their teeth unwittingly when they are feeling anxious or upset. If you are one of these people, you may benefit from cognitive behavioral therapy or a stress-reducing exercise, such as walking or yoga. You can also benefit from seeing us to address the damage caused by clenching your teeth.

Treating a Problem with Bruxism – or Clenching the Teeth and Teeth Grinding

Clenching can place a great deal of pressure on the teeth and gums – unnatural pressure that can fracture the teeth and lead to recession and loose teeth. Therefore, you need to treat the cause of the condition so any periodontal symptoms can be treated successfully. By learning why and when you clench your teeth, you can take the appropriate steps to keep it from recurring. Usually, a mouth guard is worn at night so patients do not grind or clench their teeth. In addition, patients may practice mindfulness, which is advocated in therapies, such as CBT. By following this technique, the patient is cognizant of his or her state of mind and therefore level of stress.

Why Does Clenching Happen?

According to the Mayo Clinic's website, doctors do not know completely why bruxism, or clenching and grinding of the teeth, occurs. They have reasoned that it may result from a combination of psychological, genetic, and physical factors. If clenching takes place during waking hours, it often is thought to occur because of frustration, tension, stress, anxiety, or anger. Sometimes, it is used as a way to cope during times of deep concentration. Patients who tend to be hyperactive or competitive often clench their teeth more than other personality types.

We want to help you overcome with any periodontal problems associated with bruxism, or clenching or grinding of the teeth. If you have these issues, take time to call us. Schedule an appointment and consultation today.
