Is a Same-Day Crown the Way to Cover a Dental Gap from a Missing Tooth?

Is a Same-Day Crown the Way to Cover a Dental Gap from a Missing Tooth?Missing a tooth is bound to make you feel self-conscious about the appearance of your smile. It can also cause difficulties with biting, chewing, and speaking. If a missing tooth is not replaced, your existing teeth can shift position in your mouth, leading to bite issues, uneven distribution of pressure on your jaw, tooth decay, and further tooth loss. Luckily, advances in modern dentistry have led to many different options for replacing a missing tooth. One of these options is the same-day crown.

What is a Same-Day Crown?

Traditional crowns are custom-made in a lab, and the process for getting them typically takes two office visits. At your first visit, we take impressions of your teeth that are sent to the lab. Manufacturing your custom crown usually takes one to three weeks, then when it is ready, you return to our office where we check the fit and cement the crown in place.

A same-day crown, on the other hand, only requires one appointment. While traditional crowns are manufactured in a lab, same-day crowns are made right in our office with the help of a computerized mill called a CEREC machine. First we take digital impressions of your tooth to create a 3D model. The CEREC machine follows the 3D model to cut your new crown out of a solid block of ceramic. The cutting takes less than an hour, and we fit you with your new crown that same day.

Same-Day Crown Advantages

Time and convenience are the biggest benefits of same-day crowns over traditional crowns. While the process for traditional crown placement takes weeks, a same-day crown allows your smile to be restored in just one day. With a same-day crown, you also avoid the need for an ill-fitting temporary crown that can be uncomfortable and even lead to tooth decay if bacteria gets into the gaps where the temporary crown does not fit properly.

Same-Day Crown Disadvantages

There are a few drawbacks to same-day crowns. Ceramic is not as durable as metal, but metal crowns cannot be manufactured using a CEREC machine. Also, it may be difficult for a milled crown to match your existing teeth perfectly in shade, whereas a traditional porcelain crown made in a lab would be expertly color-matched. Finally, traditional crowns are the better option if you have a fracture underneath the gum line. Contact our office to learn more about same-day crowns.
