What to do About Gum Soreness with a Bridge

Posted on 6/22/2020 by Janie Scholes
What to do About Gum Soreness with a BridgeIf you're only missing a few teeth, we may help you by fitting you with a bridge. A bridge is a prosthetic device that attaches to your natural teeth, and essentially bridges the gap where the missing teeth were. Whether it attaches to the natural teeth on either side of the gap or not, from time to time, you may experience soreness of the gums under a bridge.

What The Pain Suggests

If you do notice that you're experiencing an unusual amount of pain or gum soreness with your bridge, there are a few things you should look at as causes. How is your oral hygiene maintenance routine? Are you brushing and flossing correctly and effectively? Check to make sure that the bridge itself is clean. If your bridge is correctly supported by the surrounding natural teeth, then the contact between the bridge and your gums should be minimal. It's possible that the bridge is actively coming in contact with your gums due to some problem with the natural teeth.

What to Do?

The first thing you should do is give us a call. We'll schedule an appointment for a checkup and make sure that things are in order and staying where they're supposed to be. Make sure that you're cleaning your mouth adequately, and try rinsing your mouth with a warm salt water solution. This can help ease some of the discomfort until you get in to see us. Avoid hot or cold foods as your mouth is sensitive and this can exacerbate the pain. While a little pain is normal when you first receive your bridge (it takes time for your mouth to adjust to the discomfort of a prosthetic appliance) if you notice lasting pain it could be a sign of an ill-fitting bridge, infection or even tooth damage. Please don't hesitate to call us immediately if you're experiencing pain.
