At What Age Should You Teach Your Children to Brush Their Own Teeth?
Posted on 5/29/2020 by Janie Scholes
As your children grow up, they will begin to be more independent of you. At first, they may only do small tasks on their own, but as they develop they will begin to do more and more. One question that many of our patients have is what age they should start allowing their children to brush on their own. As with so many other questions relating to parenting, the answer is not a hard and fast one. It depends on the maturity of the child, his or her dexterity, and other things. Still, there are a few guidelines that may help you decide when it's time for your child to start brushing on his or her own.
Coordination is Key
It may be easier to teach your child that he or she needs clean teeth because of the “germs†that can cause cavities. Still, knowing that the teeth need to be clean and actually being able to clean the teeth are two very different things. Most dental professionals recommend that you brush your child's teeth until he or she is able to tie his or her own shœs. We echo this recommendation for our patients. This will usually be around age 6 or 7 at the latest. Until this point, your child simply may not be able to manipulate the toothbrush in the proper way to help keep the teeth clean.
After Your Child Begins to Brush Alone
Once you feel that your child is able to begin brushing without your help, you will still want to keep an eye on things for at least a few years. During this phase, your child will mostly be able to brush without assistance, but it is good for you to be there to check. Also, you'll be able to help him or her create the habit of proper brushing, which will go with him or her for the rest of his or her life.
