What to Do After Gum Disease Treatment to Prevent Its Recurrence

Posted on 1/10/2020 by Janie Scholes
What to Do After Gum Disease Treatment to Prevent Its RecurrenceAlthough prevention of gum disease is the most desirable outcome for your oral health, there are safe and effective treatments available if you do develop it. As with many medical conditions, however, there is a chance that gum disease, or periodontitis, will recur if your oral care routine is not effective.

After we determine the type of gum disease and treat it effectively, we provide our patients with all the information they need to care for their teeth and gums at home, in the hopes that their periodontitis won't recur.

How Can I Keep My Gum Disease from Recurring?

In addition to follow-up visits to our office, you will need to take some extra steps to make sure your gum disease doesn't return. Although you will leave our office with recommendations tailored to your unique needs, there are some general rules for home care that are essential for remaining free of gum disease.

Continue to brush and floss twice a day, as this is your number one defense against gum disease. However, we may recommend more frequent brushing for a period of time. In addition, be aware of any other factors that can put you at risk of recurrence, such as rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, and osteoporosis, and follow your treatment plan for any such conditions diligently.

For several months after treatment for gum disease, you may need to visit your dentist more often to check for plaque buildup or hidden oral health issues. This is in addition to follow-up visits to our office to ensure your treatment plan is progressing well.

Although gum disease is easily treatable, it isn't 100 percent curable and can recur without regular visits to our office and vigilance with your personal oral care routine. As always, we will design a comprehensive treatment and maintenance plan that is specific to your unique needs. Fortunately, these simple tips for extra care after gum disease treatment are highly effective. For more information about your periodontitis, contact our office for a consultation.
