Approximately 64.7 million Americans are currently dealing with gum disease, and it has become a serious issue. Gum disease can range from gingivitis to periodontitis, and each have their own effects on the gums and teeth. Gum disease is caused by an abnormal amount of harmful bacteria present in the mouth and eventually leading to complications in oral health. Causes of gum disease and dental abscesses can be attributed to genetic susceptibility, age, poor dental hygiene, and even medications. Symptoms and What to Look ForSigns of gum disease become more pronounced over time, and at its earliest stages, it can be identified by simply examining the gums. One characteristic most prevalent in early suffers of gingivitis is red and swollen gums. Occasionally, these symptoms are accompanied by bleeding and soreness. If you are experiencing these symptoms, we recommend that you schedule an appointment with us immediately to discuss them.If early signs of gingivitis are not addressed, then a person could develop periodontitis, which is characterized by the gums pulling away from the teeth exposing the roots and the formation of a dental abscess under the gum or in the tooth. In some extreme cases, oral surgery will need to be conducted resetting the gum line before the condition progresses. However, if the condition does persist, it is possible that an affected person may lose teeth or will need to have them removed to avoid pain due to deterioration of the tooth. Preventative Care and PrecautionsWe always recommend daily teeth care in the form of flossing and brushing with a fluoride toothpaste in order to prevent the development of bacterial growth in the mouth. If you are a smoker, we recommend quitting as soon as possible because it has been proven to cause gum disease. It is also recommended that you eat healthy as some foods can facilitate the formation of gum disease.Besides regular care of your teeth at home, we also recommend that you visit us at least once every six months for a teeth cleaning and check-up. Home care is only able to do so much in the way of properly cleaning your teeth, and without regular teeth cleanings, some areas of the mouth go untouched or missed. During this time, we will be able to assess the state of your teeth and offer helpful advice for continued teeth and gum care. |
