|Dentures are necessary when a person has their natural teeth removed. When this is the case, the person will need a way to chew up their food, to smile, to talk and do a number of other things. Dentures are able to provide a way for the person to do all of these things and not have to worry about not having teeth.
Shrinking Gums and DenturesDentures can wear down the gums in the mouth because they are not padded. The top layer sits and suctions against the gums, which can wear them down with time. When the dentures press against the gums in the mouth this can cause the bone that is in the gums to wear out. This is known as bone resorption. It is a common thing to happen when there are no longer teeth that the gums need to hold in place.
When the gums are being used over and over again, they break down over time. It is normal to take the dentures out and leave them out for some time to give the mouth a break, but when you don't have something to take the place of natural teeth, then this can cause a lot of issues in the gums that wouldn't otherwise be there if you had retained your natural teeth. Take care of them so you don't have to worry about these issues.
We Can Help Keep You Comfortable While Fitting Your Dentures ProperlyContact our office if you find that your gums are shrinking down too much to hold the dentures into place. This means that a new set of dentures is required in order to help the person speak, laugh, eat and more. Without the proper fit, then the gums can get sores on them and they may slip out of place often. Call us today to have us take a look to see what we can do.
