Are There Downsides of Periodontal Stabilization Splints?

Tooth become loose and, if not stabilized with splints, are at risk of falling out. Periodontal stabilization splints can be incredibly beneficial to patients, giving them a chance to preserve their teeth. But, like any major dental procedure, there are a few adverse side effects that can accompany them.

Recognizing the Possible Disadvantages of Splints

It's important to know that we do not recommend periodontal stabilization splints to our patients unless they are medically necessary and the benefits outweigh the risks. Having splints inserted can take pressure off individual teeth, improving their stability and reducing the bite force asserted upon them when you chew. For many patients, this can be a tooth-saving procedure.

However, anyone considering periodontal stabilization splints should also be aware of the possible downsides to them. These include:

•  Increased Risk of Dental Cavities: Because food debris and bacteria can accumulate along the splints, the risk of dental caries increases significantly. Taking extra care to clean your teeth around your splints can help minimize that risk.

•  Difficulty in Cleaning: Cleaning between your teeth when you have splints can be a challenge, especially when your teeth are already vulnerable to gum disease. You will have to be extra careful in your oral care when you have periodontal stabilization splints.

•  Unattractive Appearance: Splints are put in place to serve a purpose, which is to help preserve your teeth from unwanted loss. An unfortunate side effect of them is the fact that they can be somewhat unsightly, especially if we do have to cut into your teeth.

If you're struggling with loose teeth, we can assist you in keeping them stable and reduce their chances of becoming dislodged.

If your teeth seem loose or you have advanced gum disease, please call our office right away to schedule an appointment to determine if you are a good candidate for periodontal stabilization splints. We can carefully examine your mouth and advise you the best course of treatment for better protecting your teeth, gums, and oral health.
