How Flossing Helps Reduce the Chances of Gum Disease

Posted on 10/10/2018 by Janie Scholes
How Flossing Helps Reduce the Chances of Gum DiseaseGum disease is not a pleasant experience. Inflammation, bleeding gums, loose and lost teeth and pain are just a few of the problems associated with gum disease. It is not something that people want, but that does not mean they always do what they need to prevent it.

The best defense against gum disease is good oral hygiene habits. That includes brushing every day, regular checkup with our dental professionals and flossing. Flossing is something that you may or may not do. If you don't floss, take time to learn the ways that flossing can prevent gum disease.

Why Floss?

Some people think that if they brush their teeth after every meal and go the dentist for professional cleanings every six months, there is no need to hassle with flossing. They do not understand what flossing does.

Your teeth have gaps and space between them. There may also be gaps between the teeth and gums. The gaps give a place for food particles and other things to become trapped. This can lead to the growth of bacteria. The best way to reach the particles of food and other things that gets in between the teeth is with that little piece of string called floss.

This can remove the things that are stuck and will also help remove the bacteria that grows in these spaces. These are the things that lead to tooth decay and gum disease.

Do It Right
There are some people who say they still have gum disease even though they floss. The reason might be because they do not do it right. Proper flossing includes:

•  Performing it every day.
•  Reaching down to the gums with the floss and taking the time to get the back and sides of all the teeth including the back ones.
•  Using fresh pieces of floss between each tooth.

Without the proper techniques, flossing may not provide the protection from gum disease you want.

If you want to learn how to floss correctly or to see how it benefits in the prevention of gum disease, contact our dental professionals to come in for a consultation.
