When you first get dental implants placed, it is important that you remember to take really good care of your mouth during the healing process. If you do not take care of your mouth, you could wind up losing the dental implant that was placed in your gums and jaw.
One of the best ways of taking care of your mouth, both during the healing process of dental implants and during the rest of your life, is by not smoking. If you smoke while trying to heal, it could easily cost you your implants. Smoking Plus Dental Implants Equals a ProblemSmoking while your dental implants are trying to heal is going to cause a problem. It is not a matter of if, but rather a matter of when.Your smoking can do a significant amount of damage during the healing phase. It can introduce a lot of bacteria to the surgical site. Plus, smoking can also make healing a much slower process. Each time you draw a puff off of a cigarette, you are causing suction in your mouth. This can cause your implants to shift, or even pull the implants right out if they were not secure enough in the first place. This can make it to where you may need to have the implant placed again, or it could mean that your chance of having successful dental implants is completely gone. Smoking is horrible for your oral health, but when you add in the damage it can do to dental implants, it becomes a much bigger problem. For help quitting, call our office. We can help you quit smoking prior to getting implants. That way, when you do have the implants placed, you do not need to worry about the temptation of going back to smoking.
