Water's Role in Treating Gum Disease

A patient suffering from gum disease.
Water is essential to life. Staying hydrated helps to replace the fluids your body loses throughout the day. It helps you to fight brain fog, flushes toxins and allows all of the organs and cells in your body to properly do their job. And if you are currently treating gum disease, water plays a huge role.

What is Gum Disease?

Gum disease is an infection of your gums. Your gums become inflamed and bacteria travels underneath, wreaking havoc on your jawbone and your teeth. As it gets worse, your gums recede and your teeth become loose.

They may even fall out. Your periodontist can treat your gum disease, allowing you to heal and reverse its effects. Drinking plenty of water at home will help.

Saliva Production

Saliva is your mouth's natural defense against oral bacteria. It washes away leftover food particles and sugars from your teeth and kills bacteria in the process. When you are even only a little dehydrated, your saliva production suffers.

Without sufficient saliva, your mouth becomes dry, which makes it the perfect breeding ground for bacteria. Drinking plenty of water will ensure that your saliva production stays optimal.

Delivering Nutrients

Your blood cells are the transportation system that deliver nutrients and oxygen throughout your body. When your blood flow is hindered, these essential elements don't get to where they need to go fast enough.

Your gums depend upon several nutrients to stay healthy and combat inflammation. Without them, the tissue dies, which leads to gum recession. Water helps to keep your blood flow as it should be, getting your gums the nutrients they require.

Being sure that you drink plenty of water throughout the day is important to combating gum disease. Have one glass every hour. Drink water with all of your meals and snacks. And if you are on the go, be sure to bring a bottle with you as well. And if you have any concerns, be sure to contact our office.
