How You Can Tell Your Gums Are Receding

Posted on 2/20/2017 by Scholes Periodontics & Implants
A woman suffering from gum recession.
Receding gums are a problem, not just because of their cosmetic issues, but because the gum tissue provides stability to your teeth and protection to the tender roots.

Unfortunately, when your gums begin to recede, you cannot always tell right away unless you know what to look for. Here are some signs that your gums are receding.

Instability in Your Teeth

If your teeth are beginning to wiggle-even if it is only a very slight amount of movement-the problem could be at least in part because of receding gums. While other factors will play in this-such as the health and strength of your tooth roots-the gum tissue does play a large role in keeping your teeth firmly in place.

Sudden Sensitivity to Temperature
If the gum tissue is beginning to pull back, one thing that will happen is the root of your tooth will be exposed to the air. This can lead to teeth that begin to be sensitive to temperature changes. If your teeth hurt when you drink hot or cold liquids, or when cool air is drawn across them, it may be a sign that your gums are receding.

See a dentist

If you think you might be suffering from receding gums, you should see a dentist as quickly as you can. While there are some things that you can do at home to fight gum recession-mainly engaging in thorough and regular hygiene practices-there are some things that you will need to have done by a dental professional.

What's more, a dental professional can look at your gums and determine the cause of your condition. This can be very important, especially if it turns out that the cause is a hidden issue of which you were previously not aware.

Please contact our office if you have any questions about your oral health.
