How Lasers Are improving Gum Health

Lasers are now in use in a number of applications regarding oral hygiene. From use in dental cleaning to treating gum disease, lasers are improving the way dentist care for your gums.

Using lasers to treat gum disease

A major use of lasers is in the treatment of gum disease.

Traditionally, patients have had to undergo a procedure called scaling and planing. In this procedure, a dentist will use mechanical implements to physically remove plaque and other forms of buildup.

While scaling and planing is useful in preventing and treating gum disease, it can cause a fair amount of trauma to the gum tissue, leading to bleeding and discomfort. Because of this, some patients may even be hesitant to go to the dentist, which in turn leads to worse gum issues because they are not obtaining the treatment they need.

Now, lasers may be used to perform at least some portions of the scaling and planing procedure. The lasers cause less collateral trauma to the soft tissues and result in a simpler, more comfortable experience. In addition, because the experience is not as traumatic, patients are more likely to seek the treatment they know they need.

Other uses of lasers in dentistry

Lasers can also be used to remove decayed tooth and gum tissue with a minimum of unnecessary trauma. This is necessary to keep the gum tissue healthy and functioning properly, and can be done quickly and easily.

If you think you might need to have some treatments performed on your gum or teeth, ask us about the possibility of using lasers to do the job. We will be happy to sit down with you, review your options, and help you choose the method that will work best for you.
