Would Your Oral Health Benefit from Implanted Dentures?

Besides the obvious benefits of replacing rotting or missing teeth with gleaming, permanent teeth and providing all the joy of a beautiful smile, long lasting oral health can be achieved.

What are tooth implants? They are permanent tooth replacements made of multiple sections. First the implant is a screw made of medical-grade titanium. Eventually, it will bond with the bone, providing a firm foundation. It prevents bone erosion and loss. Next is the abutment that acts as a connector to one or multiple teeth and can be removed by the dentist if needed. Finally is the crown or the portion of the tooth above the gum. It is made of enamel or zirconium. All these parts form a permanent, lifetime tooth.

Unlike dentures, which must be removed and cleaned daily, a partial-plate (called a flipper) that can be very uncomfortable, and a bridge that involves compromising adjacent teeth so they can be attached. All of these have a life expectancy of 10 years at the most. Dental implants look, feel, and are treated like live natural teeth. Plus, they are good for your lifetime.

Implanted dentures help prevent bone loss and facial sinking where teeth are missing for an extended length of time. Chance of infection from degradation of adjacent teeth is eliminated. Implanted dentures are permanent and no adjustments are required.

Besides the obvious aesthetic advantages of dental implants, overall health benefits to the entire system are achieved by giving the patient a renewed ability to chew more effectively and open up the variety of healthy foods to the diet like fresh fruits and vegetables.

The single-most disadvantage to getting implanted dentures is the cost since most insurances usually doesn't cover them. However, given the advantages of implanted dentures to your oral health and general health, it is definitely an avenue to explore.
