When it comes to preventing gum disease, most of us probably think about oral care instructions and the foods that we need to avoid. However, there are a variety of great foods that can actually help you to fight gum disease, as well. Find out which foods you should be adding to your diet.Lean BeefWhile you shouldn't eat a ton of beef, as it could negatively affect your heart health, beef is high in zinc, which can be beneficial for your oral health. Zinc has anti-inflammatory properties that can help battle gum disease, and since it is also high in vitamin B6, your gums will receive an added benefit. Leafy GreensGreen, leafy vegetables like spinach, broccoli, kale, and asparagus are high in folic acid and vitamin E. If you have a folic acid deficiency, you’ll be more susceptible to developing harmful plaque that can promote gum disease, so these vegetables are recommended for improved gum health. NutsWalnuts, almonds, and cashews are packed with protein, fiber, minerals, vitamins, and essential fatty acids. Similar to lean beef, zinc is also found in high quantities in nuts, and a mega dose of zinc can fend off the bacteria that cause gum diseases. YogurtThe probiotics found in yogurt can battle gum disease by creating an environment that is inhospitable to harmful mouth bacteria. However, you should be sure to avoid products that contain a lot of added sugar, and you should also read labels to make sure that the yogurt doesn’t contain any live, active cultures. Citrus FruitsWhile many people think that they need to avoid citrus fruits because they are highly acidic, these fruits act as an immunity booster. They can create an unfriendly environment for bacteria and can fend off gum disease.
