 If you have been diagnosed with gum disease, your dentist will likely want you to come in for a periodontal scaling appointment as soon as possible. Treating gum disease right away is essential, as failure to do so could lead to a variety of oral health concerns, including tooth loss.Scaling is done to remove the plaque and tartar that has accumulated below your gum line. This procedure is extremely important for cleaning out pockets that are found between the gums and the underlying jaw bone, and without this preventative step, it would be impossible to maintain the disease. Scaling will also improve your gum health be reducing redness and swelling. If you will be undergoing periodontal scaling, there is a good chance that your mouth will be numbed beforehand. Deep cleaning will be occurring below the gums, and numbing the area will make you as comfortable as possible throughout the procedure. In many cases, dentists will recommend that your scaling is done in two sessions. This will prevent the need for your entire mouth being numbed at the same time. At each session, the teeth will be scaled to remove excess tartar and plaque from below the gums, so the process can take a little while. On average, appointments will take 30 minutes to an hour, but the exact time will be dependent on the severity of your particular case. After the procedure, it is important that you alter your dental health routine so that you don’t need another scaling session in the future. However, regardless of how great you do at caring your own teeth, you will still need to schedule regular cleanings for periodontal maintenance, as these tend to be more in-depth than the traditional cleaning and are completed every 3-4 months.
