Is a Gingivectomy Right For You?

Woman in pain from gum disease Scholes PerioIf you are living with gum disease, dental treatment is a must. Gum disease can cause loosening of the gums and the formation of gaps or pockets between the gums and the teeth.

Unfortunately, these pockets serve as a perfect hiding spot for plaque, tartar, and bacteria, which can further progress the disease. In some cases, a gingivectomy may be performed in order to relieve this problem, as this treatment option will remove infected gum tissue to reduce pockets and slow down the disease progression.

Reasons to Pursue a Gingivectomy

There are several reasons why someone with gum disease might choose to undergo a gingivectomy:

Functional purposes.

This procedure may be used to remove extra gum tissue that has resulted from certain medications.

A gingivectomy can improve the appearance of the teeth, making them look more normal in terms of size when there was formerly too much gum covering them. The end result is teeth that look more proportional and longer.

Gum and bone health around the teeth.

A gingivectomy can be used to shrink the deepest gum pockets. In some cases, bone work may also be necessary for thorough results.

About the Procedure

When you go in for your gingivectomy, the affected area will first be numbed completely. Excess gum tissue will then be removed using a scalpel, and in more severe cases, a laser or rotary instruments could be employed. Most situations won't require the use of sutures, but surgical sites can be sore for a day or two after the procedure.

Your periodontist will provide you with thorough follow up instructions on how to care for your mouth after the procedure. Medications will be prescribed to deal with your pain and discomfort, and you will likely need to return in a week to ensure that your gums are healing properly.
