Is Gum Disease Causing Your Chronic Bad Breath?

Most bad breath results from anaerobic bacteria found in the mouth, and one of the main places these bacteria like to hide out are in the pockets of the gums.

Gum treatment is one of the most common ways to help rid yourself of chronic bad breath. Your first step should be to visit your periodontist to have the health of your gums evaluated. If it is determined that you do have gum disease, there are several treatment options that might be available to you:

•

Improved oral hygiene.

If you have gingivitis, which is the earliest form of gum disease, you can actually reverse the effects by simply brushing and flossing better. It is easy to see why the accumulation of food particles and plaque may also be resulting in your stinky breath.
•

Root planing and scaling.

This specialized type of cleaning will use ultrasonic devices to remove plaque from below the gums where a regular cleaning will not be able to reach.
•

Surgery.

If the tissue and bone surrounding the teeth is so damaged that it can't be repaired with less invasive treatments, surgical procedures like pocket depth reduction or a soft tissue graft may be warranted.

In order to eliminate bad breath from your life for the long-term, you'll also need to have other dental problems corrected so that your mouth no longer serves as a safe place for bacteria. Cracks, cavities, and dental restorations that fit poorly can continue to grow these bacteria.

The result will be tooth decay, more advanced gum disease, and bad breath. Oral hygiene will be your first line of defense when it comes to maintaining fresh breath and a healthy mouth.
