If periodontal disease is causing your gums to become weak and thin, it is common for recession to occur. When the gums start to pull away from the teeth, the roots can become exposed, which can result in a variety of problems. If you are suffering from exposed tooth roots due to gum disease, you may need to undergo a gum grafting procedure. What is the Big Deal about Exposed Roots?Exposed tooth roots can cause a variety of problems :
Just because you have gum disease and some signs of recession doesn't mean that root exposure is imminent. When the recession is minor, you may have enough healthy gum tissue left that can protect your teeth, you might not need gum grafting. However, when gum recession reaches the mucosa, the body’s major defense against penetration into the root is lost, and grafting is often the best option. What Happens During Gum Grafting? If you and your dentist have decided that gum grafting is right for you, the procedure will begin by taking tissue from another area of your mouth in order to attach it around the tooth in which the roots are exposed. This can help to cover up the roots so that some of the negative consequences of exposure are not experienced. If you notice that your gums are starting to pull back from your teeth, it is important that you contact our office right away. This is one of the first signs of advanced gum disease and needs to be taken seriously. Click an icon below to share our blog. Back to Blog Home |
