Untreated Gum Disease Can Affect Your Lungs

Woman in pain from gum disease Scholes PerioIt may go without saying that failing to treat your gum disease can cause some serious issues in your mouth. As the disease progresses, bacteria will cause your gums to pull away from the teeth, exposing more of the root to decay.

Eventually, you can even experience tooth loss, but that’s not all - recent studies have shown that untreated gum disease may also affect other parts of your body, including the lungs.

Oral Bacteria Can Cause Respiratory Diseases

Your mouth is full of bacteria, so it is crucial that you are maintaining a good oral health routine in order to remove them from your teeth and gums. If you fail to do so, this long-term bacterial exposure can cause inflammation and other gum problems. Unfortunately, it can also travel beyond your mouth and into your lungs. In fact, bacteria that cause respiratory diseases like pneumonia and bronchitis may actually come from the mouth.

The fact that oral bacteria can cause problems that extend much further than just the mouth is extremely concerning. Therefore, better caring for your mouth could lead to healthy lungs. Additionally, oral appliances like bridges and dentures are a hotspot for the accumulation of these bacteria, so the health of your lungs could also depend on you properly cleaning these prosthetics.

Preventing Lung Issues as A Result of Gum Disease

Fortunately, the process of preventing this problem is pretty simple - you need to improve your oral hygiene routine. Besides brushing better and more frequently, you will also need to make sure you are following up with your professional cleanings.

While most people will have a cleaning every six months, the amount that is appropriate for you will depend on the overall health of your mouth. Contact our office about how frequently you need to be seen and what else you can do to improve the health of your gums and mouth.
