Dental Bridges Are a Great Option for People with Gum Disease

Dental bridges tend to be the better choice for people who are still living with gum disease, as dental implants are susceptible to gum disease just like the natural teeth. Since dental bridges often look just as good as implants, most people probably won't even notice the difference.

A recent study published in the International Journal of Prosthodontics examined the success rate of bridges in 100 people who had suffered tooth loss as a result of gum disease.

There were 948 abutment teeth in the mouths of these patients, and all participants were going through treatment for their gum disease. At follow-up, 90% of these abutment teeth remained in place, but 94 teeth among 41 patients were lost.

When examining the risk factors associated with these lost abutments, it was found that root canal treatments were the most common. A root canal will protect the tooth from infection, but it can also cause it to weaken. While the tooth might be fine when it comes to normal functioning, it might not be durable enough to support a dental bridge.

If you have suffered from tooth loss as a result of gum disease, you’ll need to work with your dentist to find the best approach at preserving your remaining teeth and replacing those that were lost.

Consulting with a periodontist about stopping the effects of gum disease is also an important part of this discussion, and if a tooth can’t be preserved, this dental specialist can help to determine if a bridge, dental implant, or another option will be best for restoring your smile.
