The Impact of Flossing on Gum Disease

While most people brush regularly, many do not engage in daily flossing; however, flossing is an important tool in the battle against developing gum disease.

Flossing Fights Gum Disease

Gingivitis is the beginning stage of gum disease, and it afflicts over half of the adult U.S. population. Researchers have found that flossing every day is the single biggest factor in determining whether a given individual will develop gingivitis. If you floss at least once every 24 hours, your chances of developing gum disease are much lower.

While there is no shortage of dental floss types, most dentists do not recommend that you use one type in particular. The good news is that it appears that all types of floss-waxed or unwaxed, large or small, flavored or not-is equally good at fighting the development of gum disease. The only caveat to this is if you have a dental bridge, in which case you may find dental tape (rather than dental floss) to be the most effective choice.

There are other items on the market that have been offered as tools to fight against gum disease. These items, such as oral irrigation tools (known as "water picks") and other flossing tools, can be useful in their own right; however, dentists state that they should be used in addition to, not instead of, traditional dental floss.

Gum disease is a dangerous disease, made all the worse by the way it can sneak up on its victims. If left untreated, it can lead to tooth and bone loss, gum recession, and other issues. It can even contribute to cardiovascular issues. To keep gum disease at bay, make sure you floss every day. Please contact us if you have any questions about flossing and your oral health.
