When Pregnant, Is a Little Bleeding of the Gums to be Expected?

Patient showing her red gumsCongratulations on your pregnancy! This is an exciting time filled with many changes to your body. One change you might notice is some bleeding from your gums when brushing or flossing. While this can be alarming, a little bleeding during pregnancy is actually quite common and usually not a cause for major concern. Let's delve deeper into why this happens and what you can do about it.

Why Do Gums Bleed During Pregnancy?

During pregnancy, your body produces higher levels of the hormone progesterone. This increase in hormones causes increased blood flow throughout your body, including your gums. This increased blood flow makes your gums more sensitive and prone to bleeding, even with gentle brushing or flossing.

Additionally, hormonal changes can cause changes in the bacteria in your mouth, making you more susceptible to gingivitis, a mild form of gum disease. Gingivitis causes your gums to become inflamed, red, and more likely to bleed.

Should I Be Worried About Bleeding Gums?

While occasional minor bleeding during pregnancy is usually not a cause for alarm, it's important to pay attention to the frequency and severity of the bleeding. If you experience heavy or persistent bleeding, or if your gums become increasingly painful or swollen, it's crucial to consult your dentist or periodontist.

Left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, a more serious gum disease that can damage the tissues and bones supporting your teeth. In some cases, periodontitis has even been linked to premature birth and low birth weight babies.

Maintaining Healthy Gums During Pregnancy

The good news is that there are steps you can take to maintain healthy gums during pregnancy:

Practice meticulous oral hygiene: Brush your teeth twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Be sure to brush gently along the gum line. Floss daily to remove plaque and food particles between your teeth.

Schedule regular dental checkups: It is recommended to visit your dentist for checkups and cleanings every three months during pregnancy. This allows for early detection and treatment of any potential problems.

Eat a healthy diet: Focus on consuming fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, which provide the essential vitamins and minerals needed for healthy gums. Limit sugary foods and drinks, which can contribute to plaque buildup.

Consider using an antiseptic mouthwash: Ask your dentist if using a chlorhexidine mouthwash is appropriate for you. This type of mouthwash can help control the bacteria that contribute to gingivitis.

By taking these steps, you can minimize your risk of experiencing bleeding gums and ensure the overall health of your mouth during your pregnancy. Remember, healthy gums contribute to a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby!
