What to Expect During Your Sinus Lift

Posted on 10/15/2025 by Scholes Periodontics & Implants
Sinus liftlAre you missing teeth in your upper jaw and considering dental implants as a replacement option? If so, you may need a sinus lift procedure before your implant surgery. This procedure can help to ensure the success of your implants and give you a beautiful, confident smile.

What is a Sinus Lift?

Your sinuses are air-filled cavities located near your cheekbones and forehead. A sinus lift raises the floor of the maxillary sinus, which is located just above your upper back teeth. This creates more space for bone to grow, which is necessary for placing dental implants.

There are two main types of sinus lift procedures:

•  Open Sinus Lift: This is a more invasive procedure that involves making a small incision in the gum tissue and surgically opening the sinus membrane. Bone grafting material is then added to the sinus cavity.
•  Closed Sinus Lift: This is a less invasive procedure that involves making a small opening in the bone above the sinus and gently moving the sinus membrane upward. Bone grafting material is then inserted through the hole.

The type of sinus lift procedure that you need will depend on your individual case. Your periodontist will discuss all of the options with you and help you decide which one is best for you.

What to Expect During the Procedure

The sinus lift procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia. This means that you will be awake but numbed so that you don't feel any pain. In some cases, your periodontist may recommend IV sedation to help you relax.

The actual procedure will take about an hour or two, depending on the complexity of your case. After the procedure, you may experience some swelling and discomfort. Your periodontist will prescribe medication to help you manage these symptoms.

Most patients are able to return to work and other normal activities the day after the sinus lift procedure. However, it is important to avoid strenuous activity and follow your periodontist's instructions for two weeks, while the area heals.

Why Should I Get a Sinus Lift?

A sinus lift can help to ensure the success of your dental implant surgery. Without it, there may not be enough bone in your upper jaw to support the implants. This can lead to implant failure and the need for additional surgery.

Although the sinus lift procedure itself may sound daunting, it is a safe and effective way to increase the success rate of dental implants. In fact, sinus lift procedures have a very high success rate.

What Happens After My Sinus Lift?

After your sinus lift, you will need to wait several months for the bone to heal before your dental implants can be placed. During this time, your periodontist will monitor your progress and make sure that the bone is growing properly.

Once the bone has healed, you will be ready to have your dental implants placed. This process is similar to a regular dental implant surgery. After your implants are placed, you will need to wait a few more months for them to heal and integrate with your jawbone. Finally, your implant crown, bridge, or denture will be attached to the implants.
