Protecting Your Gums When You Have Diabetes

Dentist holding diabetes signLiving with diabetes requires extra attention to your overall health, and that includes your oral health. People with diabetes are more susceptible to gum disease, also known as periodontal disease. In fact, research suggests that individuals with diabetes are two to three times more likely to develop gum disease than those without diabetes.

Why are people with diabetes more prone to gum disease?

High blood sugar levels can weaken your immune system, making it harder for your body to fight off infection. This includes infections in your mouth, like gum disease. Additionally, diabetes can reduce blood flow to your gums, making them more susceptible to damage.

What is gum disease?

Gum disease is an infection of the gums and the tissues that support your teeth. It is caused by a buildup of plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that forms on your teeth. If plaque is not removed regularly, it can harden into calculus (tartar), which can only be removed by a dental professional.

Gum disease can lead to a variety of problems, including:

•  Red, swollen, and bleeding gums
•  Receding gums
•  Loose teeth
•  Bone loss
•  Tooth loss

How can you protect your gums if you have diabetes?

The good news is that there are a number of things you can do to protect your gums and prevent gum disease. These include:

•  Brush your teeth twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Be sure to brush for at least two minutes each time, and pay special attention to the gum line.
•  Floss daily. Flossing removes plaque and food particles between your teeth, where your toothbrush can't reach.
•  See your dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings. Your dentist can check for signs of gum disease and perform a professional cleaning to remove plaque and calculus.
•  Control your blood sugar levels. This is the most important thing you can do to protect your overall health, including your oral health.
•  Tell your dentist that you have diabetes. This will help them to tailor your treatment plan to your specific needs.

Restoration options for advanced gum disease

If you already have gum disease, there are a number of treatment options available. These include:

•  Scaling and root planing. This procedure removes plaque and calculus from below the gum line.
•  Flap surgery. This surgery lifts back the gums to allow for a more thorough cleaning of the tooth roots.
•  Bone grafts. These grafts can be used to replace bone lost due to gum disease.
•  Dental implants. These implants can replace teeth lost due to gum disease.

Conclusion

Gum disease is a serious problem for people with diabetes, but it is preventable. By taking the steps outlined above, you can protect your gums and keep your mouth healthy. Remember, good oral health is an essential part of maintaining your overall health and well-being.
