Dangers of Kids Getting Dental Implants

Posted on 2/3/2025 by Scholes Periodontics & Implants
A cute little girl sitting in dentist chair before a routine dental procedure, accompanied by her grandmother. As a periodontist, I often get asked about the best way to replace missing teeth in children. While dental implants are a great option for adults, they are not always the best choice for kids. In this article, we will discuss the dangers of kids getting dental implants and why other options might be better.

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots that are surgically implanted into the jawbone. They are made of titanium, a biocompatible material that fuses with the bone over time. Once the implant is in place, a crown, bridge, or denture can be attached to it to restore the function and appearance of the missing tooth.

Why are Dental Implants Not Always the Best Option for Kids?

There are several reasons why dental implants are not always the best option for kids:

•  Jawbone Development: Children's jawbones are still growing and developing. Placing a dental implant in a child's jaw can interfere with this growth and lead to problems with the alignment of their teeth.
•  Risk of Infection: Children are more susceptible to infections than adults. The surgical procedure to place a dental implant can increase the risk of infection, which can be serious.
•  Cost: Dental implants are a more expensive option than other tooth replacement options, such as bridges or dentures. The cost of the implant itself, the surgery, and the crown or other restoration can be significant.
•  Long-term Durability: While dental implants are very durable, they are not indestructible. Children are more likely than adults to engage in activities that could damage their implants, such as playing sports or chewing on hard objects.

Other Options for Restoring Missing Teeth in Children

There are several other options for restoring missing teeth in children, including:

•  Space Maintainers: These devices are used to hold the space open for the permanent tooth to erupt.
•  Bridges: Bridges are used to replace one or more missing teeth. They are made of one or more crowns that are attached to the teeth on either side of the gap.
•  Dentures: Dentures are removable appliances that are used to replace all of the teeth in the upper or lower jaw.

Conclusion

Dental implants are a great option for adults who are missing teeth, but they are not always the best option for kids. Other options, such as space maintainers, bridges, and dentures, may be a better choice for children. If you are considering dental implants for your child, it is important to talk to your dentist about the risks and benefits involved.
