All About Treating Gingivitis

Posted on 10/1/2024 by Scholes Periodontics & Implants
a 3d rendering of the stages of gum diseaseGingivitis is a common and usually mild form of gum disease that causes irritation, redness, and swelling of the gums. It is caused by a buildup of plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that forms on your teeth. If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, a more serious form of gum disease that can damage the gums, bones, and ligaments that support your teeth.

The good news is that gingivitis is highly treatable and often preventable. With proper oral hygiene and regular dental care, you can keep your gums healthy and prevent gingivitis from developing.

Symptoms of Gingivitis

Not everyone with gingivitis experiences symptoms. However, the most common symptoms include:

•  Red, swollen, or tender gums
•  Bleeding gums when you brush or floss
•  Bad breath
•  Receding gums
•  Loose teeth

If you experience any of these symptoms, it's important to see a dentist as soon as possible. Early treatment can help prevent gingivitis from progressing to periodontitis.

Treating Gingivitis

The goal of treating gingivitis is to remove the plaque and bacteria that are causing the inflammation. This can be done through a variety of methods, including:

•  Professional cleaning: A dental hygienist will use special instruments to remove plaque and tartar from your teeth.
•  Scaling and root planing: This procedure involves removing plaque and tartar from below the gum line. It may be necessary if your gingivitis is more advanced.
•  Antibiotics: In some cases, your dentist may prescribe antibiotics to help control the infection.
•  Improved oral hygiene: This is the most important step in treating and preventing gingivitis. You should brush your teeth twice a day and floss once a day. You should also see your dentist for regular cleanings and checkups.

Preventing Gingivitis

The best way to prevent gingivitis is to practice good oral hygiene. This includes:

•  Brushing your teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste.
•  Flossing once a day.
•  Eating a healthy diet.
•  Seeing your dentist for regular cleanings and checkups.

If you have any questions about gingivitis or how to prevent it, please talk to your dentist.
