Signs of Gum Disease

Red, Swollen Gums

Normal, healthy gums are pink and feel solid. The earliest sign of gingivitis is inflamed gums that turn red or purple. Gums feel tender and puffy and may bleed when brushing. This inflammation is how the body responds to plaque buildup on teeth.

Gum Bleeding

Bleeding from the gums when brushing or flossing is a telltale symptom. Inflamed gums become irritated and can no longer protect the teeth. Bleeding indicates gingivitis but also means progression to more severe periodontitis.

Bad Breath

Gum disease is accompanied by halitosis or bad breath. Bacteria between teeth and gums produce foul-smelling compounds during feeding and reproduction. The plaque bacteria emit toxins that give the breath an unpleasant odor.

Gum Recession

As periodontal disease progresses, the gum tissue can pull away from the teeth, exposing vulnerable tooth roots. Receding gums form gaps between gums and teeth called pockets. These spaces only allow more bacteria to collect.

Loosening Teeth

Advanced periodontitis damages the bone structures surrounding teeth. With deteriorating bone support, teeth can loosen or shift positions. Loose teeth are at high risk of falling out.

Changes in Bite Alignment

A shifting bite or teeth that do not align properly indicate diminishing bone. Jaw movement alters as damaged bone can no longer support teeth in normal alignment.

Tooth Loss

Untreated advanced periodontitis can lead to tooth loss as the bone and gums supporting the tooth are destroyed. Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults.

Schedule an Exam if You Notice Symptoms

Regular dental cleanings and checkups can detect early gum disease before major damage occurs. Let your dentist know if you notice any symptoms of gingivitis or periodontitis. Catching symptoms early improves treatment success.
