Differences Between Peri-Implantitis and Systemic Gum Inflammation

Posted on 5/15/2024 by Scholes Periodontics & Implants
a 3d rendering of the stages of gum diseaseThe gums are among the softest linings in your mouth. They comprise soft tissues bound to the mandibles and underlying jawbone. Given their soft nature, the gums require delicate care and proper dental hygiene to prevent oral issues. Your gums can become sensitive if you have peri-implantitis or systemic gum inflammation. This guide explains the differences between these conditions and how to treat them.

What Is Peri-Implantitis?

Peri-implantitis is a condition that impacts the gums after obtaining dental implants. It develops when the gums surrounding a dental implant become inflamed or infected. It has similar characteristics to periodontal disease, but the only difference is that it affects the gingival tissues surrounding a dental implant. The primary causes of peri-implantitis include poor dental hygiene, tobacco use, and bacterial infections. Others include systemic disease, periodontitis, and certain medications.

What Is Systemic Gum Inflammation?

Systemic gum inflammation is a technical name for gingivitis or gum disease. The condition develops when the gums become inflamed because of poor dental care, bacterial infections, or inadequate plaque control. It causes the gums to swell, recede, or turn red. It also causes gum sensitivity, impacting dental functions. If untreated, it can result in advanced periodontal disease or lead to tooth loss. Systemic gum inflammation can also affect your overall health.

Chronic gum inflammation can release bacteria into the bloodstream, leading to severe conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and pregnancy complications. It causes the body to release inflammatory mediators that can have an adverse impact on your overall health.

Differences Between Peri-Implantitis and Systemic Gum Inflammation

While peri-implantitis and systemic gum inflammation might have striking similarities, they differ significantly. Peri-implantitis affects a targeted area of the gums with a dental implant, while systemic gum inflammation impacts the entire gum lining. Systemic gum inflammation is often a result of periodontal disease, while peri-implantitis is an infection caused by dental implant failure or complications. Both conditions have varying treatment options and present themselves in different ways.
