Who is a Good Candidate for Tooth Scaling and Root Planing?

If you are at risk of gum disease, a dental expert will recommend this procedure. During a dental exam, when they note too much plaque and tartar on the teeth, they will recommend for professional cleaning. But if your teeth are healthy, tooth scaling and root planing might not be crucial. If you have the following dental issues, you are a good candidate for the procedure:

Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease predisposes you to loss of teeth, loose teeth, and bleeding. Scaling and root planing will capture the disease in its early stages and prevent it from damaging the gums and jawbones. During the cleaning process, we also check the health of your teeth and jawbone and determine whether you require teeth replacement and bone grafting.

Gingivitis

Gingivitis is the inflammation and infection of your gum tissues. Infection occurs due to bacteria buildup in your mouth. Smoking and poor dental habits can cause plaque and tartar to accumulate at the gum line and lead to infection. If the disease is not treated in time, the gums will start to recede and form pockets between the tissues and teeth. Bacteria accumulates in these pockets and leads to teeth cavities and decay. They can also attack the underlying jawbone leading to bone loss. Tooth scaling and root planing procedure help to prevent gingivitis.

Genetic Predisposition

Periodontal disease may also occur due to genetic predisposition, even in the presence of good dental habits. If you have a family predisposition to gum disease, you need to be proactive and regularly visit the dental office. You must periodically opt for deep cleaning to remove the bacteria, tartar, or plaque surrounding your teeth.
