The Risks And Threats Of DIY Braces

Posted on 11/15/2023 by Weo Admin
A close up of a smile with bracesSocial media handles such as YouTube have become flooded platforms where you can get all sorts of information. How to make braces at home is on the list as well. Tutorials show that you can use elastics, rubber bands, and even fine wires to apply pressure on the teeth to straighten the teeth. Now, the question is, are DIY braces safe? The simple answer is no. DIY braces are not safe for the reasons explained below.

Blunt force

DIY braces apply a blunt force that is not custom-made for the teeth. In the case of elastic bands, they could slip off at any time and this could cut off the supply of blood. Insufficient flow of blood to the tooth could kill the tissues and thus make the tooth fall out. Straightening the teeth on your own could damage the teeth and gums so severely that you lose your teeth. The ligaments that hold the teeth in the bone could break due to blunt force and movement. When these ligaments break, it translates to losing your tooth. The only option left for you will be to replace the lost teeth. Replacement is a costly undertaking that you may want to avoid at all costs. If the teeth do not fall out, you risk damaging the enamel. The enamel is the outer covering of the teeth that shields the teeth from exposure to foreign substances. When the enamel is damaged, you stand the risk of increased sensitivity and a vulnerability to decay.

Injury to the gums, tongue, and cheek

DIY braces use foreign and non-refined objects that could injure the tongue and the inner lining of the cheeks. They could also cause cuts on the gums due to the sharp ends in the case of wires. Some of the objects of DIY braces are not sterilized and these could cause infections in the mouth. In the long run, when the DIY braces injure most parts of the oral cavity, you end up seeking more expensive treatment than what you would have incurred had you opted for orthodontic braces. Request a consultation with our orthodontist today to help you learn about the variety of recommended braces.
