What Is a Deep Gum Cleaning?

Deep gum cleanings are also called scaling. That's because a dentist or a periodontist uses special tools to get rid of tartar buildup at your gumline and below your gumline as well. Tartar buildup isn't something you can remove just by brushing. It is made of acids and bacteria, as well as particles of food, that have to be removed with tools. By removing the tartar, it then becomes easier to clean your teeth and gums.

There is no cure for gum disease once it progresses past stage one. Be sure to check with your dentist to see how often they want you to have your gums checked and deep cleaned.
