The Link Between Gum Disease and Alcohol

Posted on 2/20/2023 by Janie Scholes
The Link Between Gum Disease and AlcoholYou might love going home after work, taking off your shoes, and pouring yourself a glass of wine. Maybe you prefer to drink beer? Whatever your choice, it's good to drink in moderation, but you may be unaware of the possible risk you're putting yourself in when it comes to alcohol and its link to gum disease.

How Alcohol Can Damage Your Gums

The more alcohol you consume, whether it's a glass of red wine, a cold beer, or a straight shot of whiskey, the more harmful bacteria grow within your mouth. As a result, you are more likely to get gum disease, cancer, or heart disease. The body is made up of billions of bacteria and microorganisms, known collectively as the microbiome.

Due to there being a difference between "good" and "bad" bacteria, it is essential that you keep proper oral hygiene to avoid the "bad" from outnumbering the "good." The oral microbiome is substantially altered by alcohol intake. So, while experts cannot state that alcohol causes gum disease, they do recommend that people practice good dental hygiene and consume alcoholic beverages in moderation.

Prevent Gum Disease

Even if you don't drink moderately or heavily, there are steps you may do to reduce your risk of gum disease. Because alcohol isn't the only factor that causes this hazardous and dangerous condition, you should practice good oral hygiene at home, quit smoking, consume alcohol in moderation, get regular dental check-ups, and consult a periodontist if you have bleeding, inflammation, or discomfort around your gums.

Keeping healthy teeth and gums will enhance your well-being, so be mindful of how much you consume as well as what you do to safeguard the future of your smile. Contact our periodontists, who are trained experts who can help strengthen your soft oral tissues and provide protective suggestions to help you eliminate any risks associated with poor gum health.
